Practicing the ABCs of Safe Sleep During the Holidays
The holiday season often brings new sleeping environments and colder temperatures, which can increase a baby’s risk of sleep-related death. To keep your little one safe, remember the ABCs of safe sleep: babies sleep safest Alone, on their Backs, and in a Crib.
Safe Sleep in New Environments
When visiting relatives or friends, planning for your baby’s sleep space is essential. Many homes lack safe sleeping options for infants. Every Birth Network recommends traveling with a safety-approved portable crib, Pack n Play, or bassinet. Sharing a bed with your baby or placing them to sleep on a couch significantly increases their risk of sleep-related death. In fact, co-sleeping accounted for more than half of all sleep-related infant deaths in Allen County over the past five years.
Staying Warm Without the Risk
Cold weather often prompts parents to bundle their babies in blankets or heavy layers, but these practices can be dangerous. Loose blankets pose a suffocation risk, and too many layers can lead to overheating. Instead, keep your baby safe and warm with these tips:
Give Baby Their Own Sleep Space: Always place your baby in a portable crib, bassinet, or Pack n Play. Babies should never share a sleep surface with another person.
Back to Sleep, Every Time: Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep. Avoid switching between stomach and back sleeping, as it can increase the risk of sleep-related death. Share this message with older relatives, as sleep guidelines have changed over the years.
Dress Smart: Use a wearable sleeper or one-piece pajamas instead of blankets. Layer a wearable sleeper over an undershirt or onesie for extra warmth.
Check the Room Temperature: Keep the sleeping area comfortable, ideally between 68°F and 72°F.
Avoid Secondhand Smoke: Exposure to smoke increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Keep your baby away from smokers and smoke-filled environments.
Resources for Families
If you need a safe sleep space for your baby, qualifying families can receive a free Pack n Play through TRAA (260.420.6500) or Parkview Community Nursing (260.266.2472). You can call them for more information.
This holiday season, let’s work together to prioritize safe sleep practices and ensure our littlest loved ones are safe and sound. Happy holidays!
